What HSK Level Do You Need to Study in China?

First, the shortcut

If your degree is English-taught, you usually do not need HSK at all — you submit an English test (IELTS/TOEFL) instead. See the English-taught programs guide. The HSK requirement below applies to Chinese-taught programs.

HSK by degree level (Chinese-taught)

Bachelor's

Usually HSK 4 or 5. Many top schools require HSK 5 for degree study; some accept HSK 4 with a pre-degree Chinese refresher, or admit at HSK 4 and require HSK 5 by graduation.

Master's

Often HSK 5; a few programs accept HSK 4, especially in science and engineering.

PhD

Typically HSK 5, with research ability weighed more than the score.

Is HSK 4 enough?

For many bachelor's programs HSK 4 is the minimum entry, but HSK 5 gives you far more choice and is safer for competitive schools. For some master's programs HSK 4 can be enough. Always check the exact level on your target school's admission guide — it varies by university and major.
